When your trusted off-road equipment starts to shake, spit, or splash around, it usually wants to tell you something. but it does not matter. This just means it's time to get some attention, perhaps a well-deserved upgrade. Sometimes these repairs or modifications are a simple task, and sometimes it may be a more comprehensive operation. Either way, Off Road Xtreme recommends purchasing quality parts from reliable suppliers.
Our friend Derek has a beautiful 2012 Jeep Wrangler JK Sahara. It is equipped with a 3.6-liter engine and a manual transmission. He had changed the clutch once before, but a few years later, after several more miles, it started to cause him trouble again. This jeep and friends from @empire_jeep_club and @allterrain_grg did a lot of trail running in the mountains and deserts of Southern California. The original OEM clutch was released at approximately 96,000 miles. Derek installed a high-quality clutch master clutch, which performed strong at 142,100 miles, still gripping, but eventually threw the bearing unit into failure.
To help Derek return to the track, Off Road Xtreme identified Centerforce KDF379176-dual friction, clutch and flywheel kit as the ideal replacement. The included parts start with high-performance dual friction pressure plates, very robust clutches and flywheels, brand new bearings, calibration tools and some hardware. The system will be able to withstand heavy off-road running and regular street driving. After searching online, we logged on to ExtremeTerrain.com because they have J104429 items available and listed at a competitive price of $930.
Extreme Terrain is a popular online resource that not only provides quality parts and accessories, but also provides detailed production information and customer reviews. When researching products, I often find myself on their website. You can easily find product pictures, customer pictures and watch product overview videos. There is installation time, and sometimes even detailed step-by-step installation documents submitted by customers. Coincidentally, we found one specifically for the Centerforce KDF379176 kit. They do have all the hard-to-find information in one convenient location.
If you don’t already know, Centerforce is a well-known manufacturer of quality products, focusing on high-performance street and off-road categories. You can see their passion for off-road entertainment in the 2021 Centerforce Adventure Run video. Dual Friction Kit is specially designed for car enthusiasts who are looking for a high-quality off-road clutch with street attitude and performance.
Off Road Xtreme rated this job as a three-fifth wrench based on the difficulty level. It is not recommended for lane installation because the gearbox and transfer case must be dropped. A car lift is not required, but it is recommended. Need some specialized tools and expertise. For experienced wrenches and ordinary four-wheelers, you may have done this several times. Take a flower bud and some foam, and do it.
Quality parts are in hand and shipped immediately from our reliable suppliers. Now it's time to arrange a capable garage to help install a high-quality off-road clutch kit. We contacted a local store called Adventure Off-Road, which has four different locations in our area. They estimated the installation time of three to four hours and arranged an appointment for us.

Editor's note: This clutch disassembly and replacement is evaluated as three-fifths of the wrench difficulty by our professional and technical personnel. Not recommended for lane installation. A car lift is not required, but it is recommended. Need some specialized tools and experienced professional knowledge.
Before you begin: prepare the work area, set up the required tools, and lay out the parts.
The required tools and equipment include:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery negative cable.
Step 2: Disassemble and remove the shifter assembly.
After disassembly and disassembly, if you have a choice, you can lift the vehicle on a car lift or jack bracket.
Step 3: Remove four 18mm hex bolts and remove the gearbox skid plate.
Put down and remove any aftermarket or OEM skid plates, such as transfer skid plates. Unscrew four 18MM hex bolts to remove the gearbox skid plate. Take it out and set aside.
Step 4: Remove the drive shaft. Before disassembly, mark the shaft so that you know how to align it when reinstalling. You may consider labeling the ends of the shafts so that they will be reinstalled in the same direction when reinstalling.
Step 5: Disconnect and remove the external slave cylinder by removing the two 13MM nuts. The slave cylinder will be pulled out directly.
Step 6: Remove the transfer case connecting rod.
Step 7: Disconnect any cables or pipes from the top of the transmission and transfer case.
Step 8: Remove the starter by removing the two 15MM bolts and sliding the starter out.
Step 9: Remove the exhaust Y-shaped part and set it aside.
STEP 10: Support transmission. Prepare and remove the transfer case.
Step 11: Remove the beam support.
Step 12: Slowly lower the gearbox a few inches to reach the top of the two bell bolts and remove the two 15mm bolts. Please pay attention to which bolts are located when disassembling. It is best to tie or fix the gearbox to the gearbox jack.
Step 13: Continue to lower the gearbox until you have proper clearance to easily slide the gearbox out. Please pay attention to your engine bracket and the wiring harness extending along the top of the firewall in the engine compartment.
Step 14: Use the bracket or jack under the front of the engine to support and support the engine. When disassembling the gearbox, do not allow the engine to fall back to a horizontal position. You risk damage, which will make reinstallation more difficult.
Step 15: Remove the remaining 15mm bolts around the bell.
Step 16: Slide the transmission outwards and downwards.
When carrying out comprehensive work such as clutch replacement, it is best to take time to inspect the vehicle chassis and visually inspect all items there. If necessary, check, clean and replace any worn parts/installation parts/bushing/and seals.
Step 17: After removing the gearbox, thoroughly clean the inside of the gearbox bell.
Step 18: Remove the clutch fork and release bearing assembly through the release ball joint.
Step 19: Remove the pin connecting the release bearing to the clutch fork and replace with a new release bearing.
Step 20: Lubricate the valve stem in the bell housing, and then reinstall the clutch fork/throw bearing assembly.
Step 21: Apply grease to the outside of the roller bearing.
Step 22: Remove six 10MM bolts, and remove the pressure plate from the flywheel. These can be discarded because the kit provides new bolts. The clutch disc is not installed with bolts, so be careful when removing the pressure plate.
Step 23: Remove the 8 17mm bolts fixing the flywheel. The flywheel is heavy, so be careful when removing it.
Step 24: Install the new Centerforce flywheel by tightening eight 17 mm bolts to 65 foot pounds. Clean with brake cleaner after installation.
Step 25: Insert the clutch centering tool into the guide bearing.
Step 26: Slide the new Centerforce clutch onto the alignment tool.
Step 27: Install the new Centerforce pressure plate using the hardware provided by the new Centerforce. Tighten to the specified torque setting specified in the kit. Do not torque to OEM level.
Step 28: Check the clutch alignment tool and reduce the final torque to 35 foot pounds. Or factory specifications.
Step 29: Install the gearbox, transfer case, drive shaft, skid plate and exhaust device in place and reinstall them in the reverse order of removing them.
Step 30: Pass the final inspection and check your work again.
The installation of your advanced off-road clutch is complete. Go for a test drive and go back to the trail.

I am very happy about it, because I initially thought that the double friction disc would be too aggressive to drive in towns. It is actually very comfortable and very suitable for my driving style.
