There are CV axles on all kinds of vehicles, from passenger cars to trucks to minivans. They are an important part of modern automobile design, and one of the most important CV axle manufacturers in the world today is GSP.

Considering their wide range of applications, we want to educate ourselves on their role and their importance. When talking with GSP Automotive, we learned about the design and manufacture of these drivetrain components and the methods used by GSP.

Robert Murgado, Product Manager at GSP, is our contact. He introduced us to the background of GSP and the goals it strives to achieve through the final product. "We are working hard to achieve two goals in the CV axle," he began. "The first is that we meet or exceed OE specifications. The second is that we provide value to our customers."

GSP attaches great importance to CV axles. Using their vertical integration, the company can extensively control the design and manufacturing process. It extends to the rubber boots and grease that protect and lubricate the joints.

To achieve these goals, GSP utilizes its extensive expertise, testing equipment, and manufacturing capabilities. "As a vertically integrated company, we have extraordinary control over the manufacturing process," Murgado commented. "It extends to rubber and is made into boots that protect the axles."

For the design, GSP adopted an OEM-style CV axle and made improvements. “Our CV axle contains a prismatic CV joint,” Murgado said. "This design choice allows the CV to continue to move despite being hinged. In fact, our clarity has improved by 15% to 20%. We also hollowed out the joints in three places, which helps to dissipate heat. We The more you can calm down, the longer the life of the part."

GSP prides itself on the manufacture of its CV axles. What you see here is an external CV joint that is ground flat to accommodate the ball bearing.

It is the boots that protect the well-made joints, and GSP has specially made boots for each application. "It starts with the material," Mulgado said. "We use rubber compounds that need to work under extreme conditions. In vehicles, these axles can be used there for many years. In Canada, sub-zero temperatures are normal, and the grease in boots needs to be able to work under these conditions. So we actually A specific cold weather axle was recently released. The point is that we took these factors into consideration and designed an axle and trunk configuration that can work for a long time."

Last but not least is the clip that prevents the boot from falling off. "Clamps are important to prevent leakage and contamination," Murgado said. "The fixture will change for specific joints, but it always uses high-quality materials."

One of the design hallmarks of GSP is this prismatic tripod joint or PTJ. GSP Marketing Manager Autumn Lamb said: “Unless the OE design does not allow it, most of GSP's products use prismatic tripod internal joints.” The prismatic structure provides uniform wall thickness for the joint housing. This helps to dissipate heat, thereby reducing the deformation of the ball track, which is a common internal joint failure. This design provides longer nipple life, lighter weight and better overall performance. "

GSP has a wide variety of CV axles, covering a variety of brands and models. "Our catalog starts in the 1970s and continues to modern vehicles," Mulgado said. "Only U.S. cars, we have more than 2,400 part numbers. In addition, we use Motor Inc data that is licensed directly from the manufacturer and pair it with VIO [Vehicles In Operation] data to find gaps in product coverage and Evaluate which parts are meaningful for production."

From top to bottom, GSP's handling of CV axles is undoubtedly impressive. The company has made great strides in developing these transmission system components and ensuring that end users receive high-intensity labor results.
