"Growers should get a fair price this Christmas"

Growers face record production cost prices, but prices at the retail level have hardly changed. With the rising costs of chemicals, fertilizers, fuel, wood, and labor, growers continue to bear the brunt of global terms of trade, while buyers’ prices have not eased in any way.

AUSVEG calls on retailers and buyers to ensure that the prices of agricultural products received by growers better reflect the current economic climate.

In the past few weeks, AUSVEG has found that despite the substantial increase in production costs, the retail price of vegetables in Australia has remained relatively stable. This means that growers bear the brunt.

As shown in the figure above, the cost per kilogram of vegetables has remained stable in the past two years. This data includes all retail, including large retail stores, independent stores, greengrocers and specialty stores.

When the demand for fresh produce should reach its peak, Australian consumers need to understand the pressure that growers face in this challenging market, and retail prices need to reflect reality.
