Qualifying systems for the Paris 2024 Olympics and horse sport’s social licence to operate will be a key part of discussions at the upcoming FEI General Assembly, which is again being organised as a hybrid event.

It will take place in Cape Town, South Africa, from November 10 to 13, and will be held both in-person and online allowing representatives from national federations who are unable to travel to the event, to take part in the discussions and vote.

The FEI hosted its first-ever hybrid General Assembly last year, in Antwerp, Belgium.

FEI President Ingmar De Vos said that while it provided an opportunity for most stakeholders to meet once again in person, those unable to attend due to pandemic restrictions were also able to participate online.

He said the General Assembly was “a great opportunity to evaluate where we stand globally as a sport, while allowing us to look ahead and create our roadmap for the future together”.

“With six disciplines and 137 national member federations, we are a diverse community and it is crucial we have a solid platform to discuss and decide on matters at the heart of our sport.”

The Paris 2024 Olympic Qualification System for jumping, dressage and eventing will be a key part of the discussions, and FEI officials would also receive the first report from the Equine Ethics and Wellbeing Commission .

“This important commission was launched in June 2022 in response to growing public concern about the use of horses in sport, and in particular, to investigate ways of developing a practical framework that will strengthen the practice of horse sports worldwide,” De Vos said.

The South African Equestrian Federation was to host the General Assembly in 2020 but the event had to be cancelled twice because of the Covid-19 pandemic. At this time, there are no specific Covid-19 restrictions for travellers entering South Africa.

The deadline to register to attend in person is October 21, and the deadline to register for online participation is November 4. Registration is mandatory for all participants and must be made via the FEI Official Registration Platform.

All of the meetings over the time of the General Assembly are being held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

The General Assembly will also broadcast live in its entirety, and the agenda and pertaining documents will be published on the FEI Hybrid General Assembly 2022 Hub .
