THE second suspect behind the fatal shooting of former Barangay General Climaco (Malubog), Toledo City captain Antonio Yumol Canonigo has been identified. In a police report provided to SunStar Cebu on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022, Leonardo Manto, 38, was able to evade arrest when police conducted a follow-up operation against him at his house in Sitio Maraag, Barangay Sudlon in Cebu City on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 13. Manto was repairing a gun when he noticed the presence of policemen. He quickly exited through the back door of his house. Police discovered a cache of firearms inside the house that Manto allegedly used in his gun-for-hire business. The firearms included a .22 rifle with sniper scope attached and steel magazine inserted, a .45 pistol with high-capacity magazine inserted and one live ammunition, a .30 M1 Carbine rifle, a sniper scope, a rifle suppressor, a steel magazine for a KG9 sub-machine gun, a wood firearm casing, assorted firearm parts, a magazine for a .45 pistol, several motorcycle plate numbers and an expired firearms license bearing Manto’s name. Toledo City police officers, in a statement, said they are in the process of identifying the mastermind of Canonigo’s murder. “We assure the public that we will bring all of them to justice. This should send a chilling effect to all criminals not to commit crimes here in Toledo City,” they said. Canonigo was shot by Roldan after leaving a fiesta celebration in Barangay Bagakay, Toledo City on Oct. 9. The victim’s bodyguard, Bern Benlot, was able to shoot Roldan in the thigh. Roldan fled the scene on board a motorcycle driven by Manto, while Canonigo was brought to the Toledo City Medical Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. On Wednesday, Oct. 12, Toledo City police arrested Roldan in Barangay Tungkay near the border with Barangay Sudlon. A resident in the area had reported a wounded man hiding out in the bushes and asking for food and water.Roldan was brought to Toledo City Police Station where he was positively identified by Benlot as the one who shot Canonigo. During interrogation, Roldan told police about Manto’s involvement in Canonigo’s murder. Due to the gunshot wound on his thigh, Roldan was later transferred to the Toledo City District Hospital for treatment. (PAC, GPL/ TPT)
